The global cybersecurity landscape is entering an AI-fueled arms race, with cybercriminals leveraging artificial intelligence to launch attacks as security experts deploy AI-driven defenses, according to John Riggi, national advisor for cybersecurity and risk at the American Hospital Association.
The severity of cyber threats will be shaped by geopolitical conflicts and the U.S. administration’s approach to hostile nation-states that harbor criminal hacking groups, Mr. Riggi said in an April 3 news release.
He pointed to several key global tensions driving this AI cyber war:
- The war in Ukraine
- Middle East instability: Iran, which has advanced cyber warfare capabilities, is a growing concern amid tensions in Gaza.
- North Korea’s cyber-funded operations: The regime has used ransom payments from cyberattacks — such as those tied to the Maui ransomware group — to support its nuclear weapons program.
- China’s embedded malware: U.S. officials have discovered Chinese malware within critical infrastructure systems, including water supplies and telecommunications networks. Experts warn that if China moves to invade Taiwan, it could trigger these cyber threats to cripple U.S. response efforts.
