The patient-led lawsuit, filed May 3 in the U.S. District Court of Tennessee, alleges that the breach happened as a result of the health system not implementing adequate security measures.
Patient information compromised during the breach included addresses, names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, insurance information, treatment information and medical diagnosis information.
The data breach incident was due to a third-party attack that involved a file transfer software called GoAnywhere from vendor Fortra. The Fortra breach reportedly happened in late January.
Community Health Systems noted in its breach notification that it “may have incurred, and may incur in the future, expenses and losses related to this incident that are not covered by insurance.”
