More than 115 Illinois hospitals and health systems participated in a statewide emergency preparedness exercise Nov. 4 simulating an AI-driven cyberattack designed to disrupt patient care, communications and hospital operations.

The live, virtual exercise, titled “Broken Trust: AI Takes Control,” brought together multidisciplinary hospital teams to test their responses to a simulated cyber incident involving AI-generated threats.

The scenario involved the use of AI to manipulate trusted information, disrupt healthcare workers and trigger cascading effects across clinical and business operations, according to a news release from the Illinois Health and Hospital Association..

The association described the event as the largest AI-focused emergency preparedness exercise involving hospitals and health systems conducted in Illinois.

“Protecting patient care must remain at the center of our preparedness efforts as cyber threats against healthcare organizations continue to evolve,” A.J. Wilhelmi, president and CEO of the association, said in the news release. “Exercises like this give hospital teams an opportunity to test their response plans, strengthen coordination and identify vulnerabilities before a crisis occurs.”

The exercise was led by Keneatha Johnson, assistant vice president of safety and emergency preparedness at the association, and Stephen Weiler, manager of resiliency services at Tarian Group.

The association represents more than 200 hospitals and nearly 40 health systems across Illinois.
