Cybersecurity threats dominate CIO concerns

Increased cybersecurity threats have become the top issue for CIOs and have caused them to work more closely with chief information security officers, according to Sept. 30 reporting in The Wall Street Journal.

CIOs cited the rise of remote work, increased sophistication of cyberattacks and the Russian war on Ukraine as reasons for the heightened threat environment. As a result, CIOs and CISOs are collaborating more than ever.

"The CIO's role in cybersecurity has continued to grow over the years," Cigna CIO Noelle Eder said. "But I think what this year reflects is a pretty massive shift" in the threat landscape.

Business recruiters have seen higher compensation and higher competition for candidates applying for a CISO role.

"Having the CIO as the champion for cybersecurity is absolutely critical," Cigna CISO James Beeson said. Mr. Beeson told The Wall Street Journal that his role is tied to the business in a way it hasn't been in the past. "You've got to work directly with the business. You've got to realize that cybersecurity and making decisions about mitigation is really a balancing act."
