CMS to Investigate Improper PQRS, eRx Program Incentive Payments

CMS has announced a four-year project to evaluate payments made through its Physician Quality Reporting System and Electronic Prescribing incentive programs, with the goal of identifying and recouping improperly awarded funds.

“Data submission, processing and reporting will be analyzed for potential errors, inconsistencies and gaps that are related to data handling, program requirements and clinical quality measure specifications of PQRS and eRx program,” according to the notice. CMS will then conduct follow-up interviews with select organizations.

According to recent CMS data, 280,229 eligible professionals participated individually in PQRS and 282,382 eligible professionals participated in the eRx incentive program in 2011. That year, CMS paid a total of $261 million in PQRS incentive payments and a total of $285 million in eRx incentive payments.
