CHIME task force publishes first chapters of opioid playbook for CIOs

The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives published the first three chapters of an opioid playbook for hospital IT leaders.

The CHIME Opioid Task Force was formed last year to find ways to use health IT to address the opioid epidemic. It was founded after co-chair Ed Kopetsky, CIO of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., lost a son to an opioid overdose. Over the past year, the task force has hosted six free educational webinars and advocated for congressional leaders and federal staffers to update policies related to opioids and addiction.

The Opioid Task Force Playbook is a guide, informed by CHIME members and partners, that provides CIOs with resources to build IT tools that reduce unnecessary opioid prescriptions.

The task force also named two new co-chairs for 2019:

  • Patricia Lavely, senior vice president and CIO of Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, Ga.
  • Dave Lehr, vice president and CIO of Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Md.

Mr. Kopetsky will remain on in his position this year. Jim Turnbull, CIO of University of Utah Health Care in Salt Lake City, the other founding co-chair stepped down in February.
