California legislators push forward bill outlawing ransomware

A bill that would prosecute the actors behind ransomware under a statute focused on cybercrime and extortion has cleared the California senate’s public safety committee, according to a Reuters report.

California Senate Bill 1137, authored by Sen. Bob Hertzberg (D-18th District), is cosponsored by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. To become a law, the bill now must move through an appropriations committee, earn approval from both houses of California’s legislature and be signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, according to the report.
