California AG Publishes Medical Identity Theft Guidelines

The office of California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris has released a guide for providers on preventing, detecting and mitigating the effects of medical identify theft.

Key recommendations include:

  • Increase awareness among staff about the risks and prevalence of medical identity theft.
  • Increase patient awareness of all forms of medical identity theft, including knowingly using someone else's medical information to obtain treatment, and potential consequences.
  • Use technical fraud detection measures such as anomaly detection and data flagging.
  • Implement an identity theft response program for flagged records, and train staff accordingly.
  • Offer patients suspected of being medical identity theft victims a copy of their records to review.
  • Promptly correct any record corrupted by medical identity theft.
