Midland-based MyMichigan Health is warning patients and community members about a phone scam in which callers impersonate the health system and attempt to obtain private information.
The health system said it has received reports of individuals falsely identifying themselves as MyMichigan representatives and asking patients to disclose personal or health information, according to a notice posted on the health system’s website.
MyMichigan said the calls are not legitimate communications from the health system.
When MyMichigan contacts patients about appointment reminders or general inquiries, it does not ask them to provide private health information over the phone. The health system said it only requests such information when patients initiate calls to its offices or provide the information in person during a visit.
MyMichigan urged patients to avoid sharing personal or health information with unsolicited callers and warned that caller ID cannot always be trusted because phone numbers can be spoofed.
The health system did not disclose how many individuals have received fraudulent calls or whether any patients have provided information to the scammers.
