Dr. MacRae and his team seeks to understand the genetics behind common cardiovascular disease. Using the award, the research team plans to study and discover new genetic, molecular and cellular markers of coronary heart disease that could screen the population to identify individuals at risk of developing the disease.
“We’re no longer going to wait for a patient to show up with complaints or symptoms or something I recognize as a problem,” Dr. MacRae said in a statement. “We’re going to actively go out and look for their problems earlier and earlier, and find the most fundamental mechanisms of the disease.”
Verily, AHA and AstraZeneca selected Dr. MacRae’s project out of a pool of 349 applicants from 22 countries.
