athenahealth’s deal with Trinity will support future innovation, CEO Jonathan Bush says

Earlier this week, athenahealth announced it would provide its EHR, practice management and patient engagement solutions in some physician network offices of Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health, a deal in which revenue will go toward supporting more innovative products, according to a Boston Business Journal report.

Jonathan Bush, co-founder and CEO of athenahealth, said the deal with Trinity Health is a basic one, but it does help support the company’s future innovation plans.

“I spend most of my time on athenahealth’s edge products, but this isn’t edge,” Mr. Bush told Boston Business Journal. “This [Trinity deal] is fairway, meat and potatoes; stuff we’re good at. We get a big load of stuff we’re already good at doing. That’s what pays for everything else.”

The innovative, “edge” goals, Mr. Bush said in the report, are what propels the company in the long-run.
