athenahealth purchases BIDMC's EHR, solidifies moves into hospital market

athenahealth has purchased the web-based clinical applications and EHR platform developed by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

The platform, named webOMR, is recognized as one of the first hospital-built inpatient and outpatient EHR systems, and is also the first self-built EHR system to achieve meaningful use certification, according to an athenahealth news release.

BIDMC is the only U.S. hospital to implement a web-based EHR developed in-house, according to a Forbes report, and now the hospital is approaching their agreement with athenahealth to expand its reach.

webOMR will be integrated into athenahealth's existing product portfolio, and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham (Mass.) will serve as a pilot testing site for the newly integrated service.

"The culture of Beth Israel Deaconess has always been to challenge the status quo," said John Halamka, MD, CIO of BIDMC. "We know the days of self-built information systems will not last forever. We want to continue to innovate while also leveraging the scale of a commercial vendor."

Through this new agreement with BIDMC, athenahealth is positioned to further solidify its standing in the hospital inpatient market, as the company's offerings are growing to cover the entire care continuum. Last month, athenahealth announced it acquired RazorInsights, a cloud-based EHR and financial solutions provider for rural, critical access and community hospitals.

"We want to be able to do all delivery of care," said athenahealth CEO Jonathan Bush in the Forbes report.

The price of the agreement with BIDMC was not disclosed.
