Worldwide Deaths Related to Post-Anesthetics Decreased by 90 Percent Since 1970s

A team of researchers analyzed 87 worldwide studies that showed post-anesthetic deaths have declined by as much as 90 percent since the 1970s.

The risk of dying from any cause within 48 hours of surgery has decreased by 88 percent in that same time frame.

The study requires evidence-based interventions to reduce disparities between outcomes in higher and lower income countries. And while progress has been made, anesthetic mortality remains high when compared with death caused by air travel.
