AMIA targets healthcare professionals in 'Why Informatics?' campaign

The American Medical Informatics Association launched a public education campaign for healthcare professionals called "Why Informatics?" June 1.

The campaign features informatics professionals discussing the influence of their research on the healthcare industry through social media, videography and data visualizations. Informaticians — who collect, manage and analyze data — have contributed to numerous discoveries in medical treatment and public health, according to AMIA.

The campaign, which will run through 2018, emphasizes how informaticians will play an increasingly important role in research as the healthcare industry focuses its efforts on data analytics.

"Informatics research and application need to be encouraged at all levels of healthcare and government policy," said Thomas H. Payne, MD, chair of the AMIA board. "Helping audiences outside the field to understand informatics and why it can improve health of people and populations is our goal."
