Allscripts partners with Microsoft to develop IT for clinical research

Allscripts and Microsoft have joined forces to design a new clinical research model that leverages the EHR and other technologies clinicians use when providing treatment.

Veradigm — Allscripts' payer and life sciences division that debuted in late 2018 — signed a memorandum of understanding with Microsoft to lead this exploratory effort. The collaboration's first project will focus on integrating research capabilities into Allscripts' cloud-based EHR, such as introducing functions that automatically match eligible patients with clinical studies.

The collaboration aims to accelerate the development of new therapies using Microsoft's cloud and artificial intelligence capabilities to draw insights from real-world patient data held in Allscripts' products. Future efforts will tackle developing new workflows and compliance frameworks that support clinical research organizations and pharmaceutical companies working with this new model.

"In partnership with Microsoft, Veradigm is committed to a holistic approach to developing the platform that supports integrated clinical research," said Tom Langan, CEO of Veradigm. "The teams are prepared to work with the industry and regulators to ensure that the promise of this new approach is fully realized, bringing the practice of clinical research into the 21st century."
