Anthropic candidates are being evaluated on more than technical skills, Bloomberg Businessweek reported May 28.
The AI startup behind Claude uses an intensive hiring process that probes candidates’ ethical reasoning, intellectual independence and views on AI safety. One of the most notable parts of the process is Anthropic’s “culture interview,” designed to evaluate candidates’ values, worldview, ethical decision-making and ability to discuss controversial topics respectfully with people who hold different viewpoints.
The company, founded by former OpenAI leaders Dario and Daniela Amodei, has become one of the most sought-after employers in tech amid explosive growth and soaring valuations.
Ms. Amodei said on a podcast in 2025 that the company asks candidates about unusual beliefs they hold and how they defended those views in uncomfortable situations. Anthropic also looks for employees who can think independently and remain skeptical, including about the company itself and its approach to AI development, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.
Candidates can go through up to five rounds of interviews and skills assessments. The company also reportedly prohibits the use of AI tools during interview exercises unless explicitly authorized. As competition for AI talent intensifies, some candidates are paying thousands of dollars for interview coaching to improve their chances of landing roles at Anthropic and other leading AI companies.
Anthropic recently announced it raised $65 billion in Series H funding, valuing the company at $965 billion post-money, according to a May 28 news release.
The company has also rapidly expanded its workforce in recent months, hiring employees across recruiting, finance, legal, sales and other business functions. Bloomberg Businessweek cited data from Live Data Technologies showing Anthropic has more than 3,000 employees, including about 1,000 hired since November.
Job postings frequently advertise compensation packages exceeding $250,000, with salaries for some key roles reaching as high as $850,000. Anthropic also has an 80% retention rate over two years, the highest among its peers, according to a 2025 SignalFire analysis.
