WashU Medicine launches AI imaging center

The Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at St. Louis-based Washington University School of Medicine has established the Center for Computational and AI-enabled Imaging Sciences to advance precision diagnosis and treatment through medical imaging.

The center will unite collaborators from across WashU Medicine and McKelvey School of Engineering to create AI tools that support clinical decision-making, according to a Nov. 3 news release. These tools feature imaging algorithms that integrate data from mammograms, MRIs and digital microscope images to identify disease indicators.

The center aims to improve detection and risk prediction in areas including cancer, cardiovascular and neurological disease. Existing tools developed at Washington University include a model that predicts breast cancer risk over five years and a brain-mapping application used in surgical planning.

Leaders said the center will act as a hub for AI-enabled image analysis, leveraging millions of medical images and de-identified patient records to support clinical care, research and training.
