Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center says it relies upon artificial intelligence to help ease staffing constraints, but the technology is “not designed to reduce head count.”
President and CEO Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, said the overall goal is to support scalable growth without proportional labor increases. “In the long run, that will make healthcare here less expensive — for us and for our patients — and bolster our economic resilience,” he said in an Oct. 9 news release.
Dr. Balser, who also serves as dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, outlined the system’s strategy during its fall 2025 Leadership Forum. He said Vanderbilt Health is deploying tools such as Dax Copilot and AI-assisted radiology prioritization to streamline documentation and speed diagnoses.
