Chris Fall has resigned as director of the U.S. Center for AI Standards and Innovation, the Commerce Department office responsible for testing frontier AI models.
Mr. Fall had led CAISI since April, when the Trump administration tapped him for the post after previous appointee Collin Burns left within days of starting. A Commerce Department spokesperson confirmed the July 20 resignation to CNBC and did not disclose a reason.
NIST Director Arvind Raman, PhD, will serve as acting director of CAISI while continuing to lead the National Institute of Standards and Technology, according to the July 20 story. The department said it expects to name a permanent successor in the coming weeks.
CAISI, formerly the U.S. AI Safety Institute, evaluates frontier AI models for cybersecurity, biosecurity and chemical weapons risks. Mr. Fall’s exit leaves the office without permanent leadership as the White House also lacks a dedicated AI policy czar; David Sacks stepped down from that informal role in March.
Health system leaders are closely tracking federal oversight of frontier models. Becker’s previously reported that hospital CIOs pushed to be included in Anthropic’s Project Glasswing initiative, which tests advanced Claude models for exploitable vulnerabilities before public release, citing healthcare’s legacy IT and long patching cycles.
Mr. Fall’s resignation adds to turnover across the federal government’s AI leadership as agencies weigh how to vet increasingly capable models on a shortening timeline. Axios first reported the news of his departure.
