President Donald Trump says he is forming an “AI Force” to oversee the AI industry and will soon name an AI “czar,” modeling the initiative on the Space Force he created during his first term.
In a Sept. 19 Truth Social post, President Trump framed the effort as protective rather than restrictive. “We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry,” he wrote, adding that the government would instead “cherish” and “watch over” the sector as it expands. He said existing criminal and civil laws are sufficient to address wrongdoing by AI companies, without detailing the AI Force’s structure, authority or placement within the federal government.
The announcement follows mounting warnings from AI researchers and industry leaders about the pace of the technology’s development, concerns President Trump grouped with a list of what he called “Radical Left” hoaxes. He called AI “the next Industrial Revolution” and said it could eventually account for as much as 25% of U.S. gross domestic product.
The move comes as health system leaders closely track federal AI oversight. The Trump administration’s AI safety office has lacked permanent leadership since its director resigned in July, and the White House has had no dedicated AI policy czar since David Sacks stepped down from that informal role in March.
