Most ambient AI deployments in healthcare follow the same arc: a physician pilot in outpatient settings, a proof of concept, a measured expansion to more clinic sites. Kevin Cook, divisional president of Sacramento-based Sutter Health’s Greater Silicon Valley Market, has moved past that sequence.
Ambient listening is now active across all primary care clinics in the Silicon Valley division and is expanding into specialty care. The next phase, already underway, brings the technology to the nursing floor.
“We’re using ambient listening in all our primary clinics, gradually expanding that into our specialties as well,” Mr. Cook said in a recent “Becker’s Healthcare Podcast” interview. “We’re starting to roll out on some of the nursing floors as well, understanding that clinical documentation has been a heavy burden for providers over the last several years.”
The move into inpatient nursing is significant. Ambient tools were designed around the physician office visit — a discrete, scheduled encounter with a natural beginning and end that maps cleanly onto transcription and note generation. Nursing documentation operates on a different structure: continuous, spanning shift handoffs, medication records, care plan updates and patient observations. The workflow doesn’t pause the way a physician encounter does..
The ambient rollout is part of a broader AI deployment that includes AI-enabled care coordination built into Sutter’s EHR. Mr. Cook described the guiding logic as simplification — reducing the documentation and navigation complexity that both providers and patients face.
“Healthcare is really complicated,” he said. “We’re doing our best to simplify it. AI gives us a pathway to do that.”
The Silicon Valley geography sets the pace. Sutter’s division operates in a market shaped by proximity to some of the world’s largest technology companies — an environment that raises expectations from both patients and clinical staff about what digital tools should be able to do.
“We’re doing our best to take advantage of being located here with some of the most innovative companies in the world and really thinking about how to better provide services to our patients,” Mr. Cook said.
