On Aug. 7, OpenAI released GPT-5 — its latest AI model — which the company says includes significant improvements in addressing health-related questions.
The model performs considerably better than previous versions on HealthBench, a benchmark that uses real-world scenarios and physician-defined criteria, according to OpenAI.
GPT-5 is designed to serve as a thought partner, helping users understand their health, ask informed questions and prepare for conversations with medical providers.
The tool can tailor responses based on a user’s context, knowledge level and location, OpenAI said in an Aug. 7 news release.
The company emphasized that GPT-5 is not intended to replace medical professionals, but rather to support users in evaluating decisions and navigating care options.
