OpenAI adds Codex support for HIPAA-compliant healthcare use

OpenAI is expanding Codex capabilities with new mobile access and support for HIPAA-compliant use in certain enterprise healthcare settings.

Here are five things to know:

  1. OpenAI said Codex, its AI coding and workflow agent, is now available through the ChatGPT mobile app, allowing users to monitor and manage ongoing tasks from their phones while the system operates on connected laptops, remote machines or enterprise environments.

  2. According to a May 15 news release, eligible ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces can now use Codex in HIPAA-compliant local environments through command-line, integrated development environment and app-based local environments.

  3. OpenAI said the new HIPAA-compliant capabilities are intended to help healthcare organizations support patient care and operational workflows “with greater speed and confidence.”

  4. The company did not disclose additional details about compliance safeguards or identify healthcare organizations currently using the capability.

  5. OpenAI also announced broader enterprise and developer updates tied to Codex deployments, including general availability of Remote SSH connectivity for managed enterprise environments, Hooks features that can scan prompts for secrets and customize Codex behavior, and programmatic access tokens for enterprise and business customers to support CI pipelines, release workflows and internal automations.

According to the news release, Codex in the ChatGPT mobile app is rolling out in preview on iOS and Android across all subscription tiers, including Free and Go plans, in supported regions.
