National Nurses United will hold demonstrations against Palantir in eight U.S. cities on Aug. 27, calling on hospitals and elected officials to end contracts with the data analytics company.
The protests, described by the union as its largest coordinated action against Palantir to date, are set for Palo Alto, Calif.; Los Angeles; Chicago; Washington, D.C.; Portland, Maine; Asheville, N.C.; Austin, Texas; and New Orleans.
National Nurses United, which represents more than 225,000 registered nurses, said Palantir now manages data systems tied to more than one-fifth of U.S. hospital beds. Palantir’s hospital-facing products include tools used for functions such as staffing and scheduling, in addition to broader data-analytics and billing applications.
NNU President Jamie Brown, RN, said in a statement that nurses have “seen hospitals start to buckle under conditions of extreme scarcity” as they weigh the growing role of outside technology vendors in patient care and staffing decisions.
The demonstrations follow separate scrutiny of hospital-Palantir contracts this year, including at MaineHealth and New York City-based NYC Health + Hospitals, which is winding down a roughly $4 million Palantir agreement.
