Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic developed an AI model that identified twice as many cases of advanced chronic liver disease in asymptomatic patients compared to standard diagnostic methods.
The model analyzed data from 11,513 patients undergoing routine electrocardiograms to detect electrical patterns in the heart linked to liver scarring, according to a Dec. 17 news release. Diagnoses were confirmed through imaging or blood tests.
Researchers said earlier diagnosis may allow clinicians to intervene before the disease reaches irreversible stages and reduces the need for liver transplantation.
A total of 248 clinicians across Mayo Clinic in Rochester and its health system participated in the randomized clinical trial. The initiative is part of Mayo Clinic’s broader Precure program, which focuses on predicting and intercepting diseases before they progress.
