The JAMA Network announced Oct. 15 that it is launching a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to AI and emerging healthcare technologies, with manuscript submissions opening in early 2027.

The online-only journal, called JAMA AI, will be the 14th publication in the JAMA Network.

The journal will publish research on generative and agentic AI, clinical decision support, AI-enabled diagnostics and therapeutics, digital health technologies and methods for evaluating their safety and effectiveness. It will also examine how emerging technologies affect patients, clinicians and health systems, according to an Oct. 15 news release from JAMA.

Roy Perlis, MD, director of the Center for Quantitative Health at Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital, will serve as the journal’s inaugural editor in chief. On Feb. 1, 2027, he will become director of the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute at the University of California San Francisco.

The JAMA Network said the need for rigorous evidence to guide the safe, effective use of AI has become increasingly urgent as adoption accelerates across medicine.

Dr. Perlis is also the founding editor in chief of JAMA+ AI, a channel the network launched in 2024 to highlight AI research across its journals. The channel will continue operating.
