Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare has built its AI strategy around a portfolio of six initiatives spanning nurse scheduling, clinical documentation, maternal care and hospital discharge.
Among the initiatives detailed in a Management in Healthcare: A Peer-Reviewed Journal piece republished July 21 on HCA’s website: Timpani, a nurse scheduling platform now live at more than 130 hospitals and 1,200 nursing departments, has cut scheduling time from 8 to 15 hours a month down to 2 to 3 hours per cycle and contributed to a 6% decline in nurse turnover.
A separate tool, Nurse Handoff, built with Google Cloud and now in beta at eight hospitals, was rated 97% accurate and 95% helpful by nurses testing it. HCA Healthcare is also piloting ambient clinical documentation in Texas with Commure and developing a maternal-fetal care platform with GE HealthCare, which announced its first release in October 2025.
Dr. Michael Schlosser, MD, MBA, senior vice president and chief transformation officer at HCA, wrote that only 13% of healthcare systems have a clear organizational strategy for integrating AI into clinical workflows, citing a 2025 survey by Sage Growth Partners, even as most executives see the technology’s potential to improve care and cut costs.
HCA Healthcare operates 189 hospitals and roughly 2,500 other sites of care across 19 states and the U.K., with a workforce that includes 100,000 nurses — giving its AI portfolio approach outsized reach across the industry.
