AI-driven documentation remains a top priority for healthcare organizations aiming to reduce administrative burdens and allow clinicians to focus more on patient care, an April 2 report from KLAS found.

KLAS surveyed 256 leaders from hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, payers and other healthcare entities about their current adoption of artificial intelligence and future investment plans.

Here are the key areas where respondents said they are investing in AI:

  • AI-driven documentation: Many respondents reported plans to pilot or implement ambient speech AI tools from vendors such as Abridge and Microsoft. AI-powered scribes and virtual assistants are also gaining traction, particularly in ambulatory and emergency care settings.

  • Radiology: This continues to be a core area for AI investment, with organizations exploring AI-enhanced solutions such as Rad AI and Aidoc to support diagnostics.

  • Administrative and financial applications: AI-enabled tools with administrative and financial capabilities are drawing increased interest. Organizations are exploring predictive analytics and AI-driven risk models to improve clinical decision-making and optimize revenue cycle management.

  • Respondents also reported plans to invest in AI tools that streamline administrative processes, including denials management, coding automation—such as Dolbey’s computer-assisted coding solution—patient financial services, and predictive payment modeling tools like Epic’s solution.

  • Patient engagement and credentialing: AI-driven chatbots and virtual assistants, such as Amelia and Janus Health, are attracting interest for their ability to enhance patient engagement and streamline provider credentialing.
