Hackers use Claude Code to target healthcare organizations

Hackers used Anthropic’s Claude Code to compromise at least 15 healthcare organizations in Argentina, according to cybersecurity company CrowdStrike.

A second threat actor, who is Chinese-speaking, primarily reached Claude models through a China-based proxy service and targeted more than 20 organizations worldwide, including healthcare and biotech companies in the U.S. and Brazil.

The Oct. 21 report profiles four previously unreported threat actors that ran agentic AI campaigns between May and August 2026. In these campaigns, AI agents made decisions and executed commands. All four groups left their attack frameworks exposed in open directories, which gave researchers a detailed view of how they worked.

The actor behind the Argentina attacks speaks Spanish and English and stole credentials and medical records from at least one victim. The hacker built an automated penetration-testing tool on top of an open-source project. In that setup, one Claude Code agent picked the next attack stage and a second agent carried it out.

Of the remaining two actors, one is Indonesian-speaking and had little security expertise but still breached government and private-sector targets. That actor had to step in periodically to push past the model’s safety guardrails. The other, a Russian-speaking group, stole client data from a U.S. customer relationship management vendor.

CrowdStrike assessed with moderate confidence that agentic AI is turning basic offensive cyber operations into a commodity, noting that agentic AI can often achieve its objectives within an hour. The company expects that over the next 12 months, some low-skill attackers will match the effectiveness and scale of organized criminal or state-linked groups.
