One in 3 U.S. consumers has used an AI chatbot for health information, double the share from a year ago, digital health researcher Rock Health found.

The largest share of people are turning to ChatGPT, with a small percentage using provider chatbots, according to the March 23 report based on a survey of 8,000 adults in December.

AI in healthcare is the greatest experiment in the history of medicine,” said Robert Wachter, MD, professor and chair of the San Francisco-based UCSF Department of Medicine, in the report. “The healthcare status quo isn’t working, and I can’t see how we get to better, safer, more accessible, more convenient, less biased, and less expensive care unless we use AI tools effectively.”

Here is the share of chatbots used for health information searches (respondents could choose more than one):

— ChatGPT: 23%

— Gemini: 15%

— Perplexity: 5%

— Chatbot from a provider: 5%

— DeepSeek: 4%

— Chatbot from a payer: 4%

— Claude: 3%
