Cleveland Clinic Cancer Institute has established a task force to evaluate AI tools and streamline their adoption into operations and clinical care.
The task force, called the Cancer Institute Office of Technology and Digital Strategy, is led by oncologists Paul Thambi, MD, and Louis Williams, MD, according to an Oct. 26 news release from Cleveland Clinic.
The cancer institute currently uses AI to personalize radiation doses for lung cancer patients, reduce clinical teams’ note-taking and streamline the patient referral process.
The Cancer Institute Office of Technology and Digital Strategy will vet AI partnership proposals and review non-research-based applications for safety and alignment with enterprise goals, the release said.
“It’s crucial to have a system to continuously re-evaluate the effectiveness of each tool,” Dr. Williams said in the release. “You need to analyze the output of models on an ongoing basis. There can be drift in a model that may influence its accuracy over time or there may be bias in the model that isn’t apparent upfront. That’s why it’s necessary to have a unified strategy that includes training models to identify mistakes before a model goes into production as well as longitudinal risk assessment to ensure safety.”
