The Cancer AI Alliance has launched a collaborative AI platform for cancer research.

The platform enables participating cancer centers to train AI models on millions of clinical data points without moving individual data outside institutional firewalls. It is designed to accelerate discovery while maintaining strict privacy, security and regulatory standards, according to an Oct. 1 news release.

Eight initial projects are underway using data from more than 1 million patients, with plans to launch dozens more in the coming year.

The alliance includes Boston-based Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Seattle-based Fred Hutch Cancer Center, New York City-based Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center and Whiting School of Engineering at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins. Technology collaborators include Amazon Web Services, Deloitte, Ai2, Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA and Slalom.

Jeff Leek, PhD, vice president and chief data officer at Fred Hutch, is the founder and scientific director of the alliance. He said the platform could accelerate the pace of discovery by up to tenfold.
