Jacksonville, Fla.-based Baptist Health has cut coder chart review time by 20% after deploying Epic’s AI Professional Billing Coding Assistant, generating an estimated $924,000 in annual labor savings.
The tool surfaces suggested codes from clinical documentation, allowing the health system’s professional billing coders to validate rather than build claims from scratch. Baptist Health reported that the time saved per chart freed coders to focus on higher-value, more complex cases, according to a June 8 EpicShare article.
Beyond the labor savings, the system reported gains in clean claim rates and overall coder productivity — two metrics that directly affect revenue cycle performance and the speed at which claims move to payment.
The deployment fits a broader AI strategy at Baptist Health, which has tied technology investments to measurable return. Aaron Miri, DHA, executive vice president and chief digital and information officer, has pressed partners for codevelopment and defined ROI on every initiative. “Every initiative needs a defined ROI, whether that’s measurable time returned to clinicians or a direct financial impact,” Dr. Miri has said of the system’s approach.
