Anthropic and Trump administration officials are working to resolve a dispute that led the administration to restrict access to the AI company’s newest models, The Wall Street Journal reported June 15.
The Journal reported discussions continued June 15 between Anthropic executives and administration officials after the government prohibited foreign governments, companies and many individuals from accessing Anthropic’s Fable 5 model. Anthropic subsequently shut down access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all users to comply with the restrictions.
According to the report, the latest talks included senior Anthropic technical staff and were led by the Commerce Department and National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross. Anthropic told the Journal that both parties are working quickly to resolve the matter.
The discussions follow concerns about the models’ safeguards. The Journal reported Amazon researchers found a way to get around Fable 5’s guardrails days after the model was released. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy discussed the issue with administration officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon Web Services, has also participated in some discussions with administration officials.
Amazon is one of Anthropic’s largest investors and partners, supplying the company with chips needed to run its models. The company is also a major government cloud-computing partner.
The Journal reported the move marked an unprecedented step for a leading U.S. AI company, with Anthropic taking its newest models offline because of government intervention tied to concerns about safeguards.
The developments come as health systems and other organizations continue evaluating how to deploy generative AI technologies while addressing governance, security and cybersecurity considerations.
