Anthropic is quietly growing into one of the most influential — and most valuable — AI companies in the world.

And while the startup has begun courting health system customers, its reach extends far beyond healthcare.

Here are 12 things to know about the surging AI giant:

1. Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former employees of OpenAI, including siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, who are CEO and president, respectively.

2. The company released its AI chatbot, Claude, in March 2023. Claude has grown to have tens of millions of users, though it still significantly trails market leader ChatGPT.

3. Anthropic unveiled Claude’s “constitution” in May 2023, outlining the chatbot’s ethical guiding principles, and an updated version in January.

4. Mr. Amodei warned in May 2025 that AI could cause U.S. unemployment to rise to 20% within five years as the technology displaces white-collar workers.

5. Anthropic worked with California state lawmakers in September to pass the nation’s first law requiring major AI developers to disclose their safety protocols.

6. In January, Anthropic released Claude for Healthcare, an enterprise platform for hospitals and health systems.

7. An early health system customer, Phoenix-based Banner Health, summarizes lengthy oncology patient records with Claude and is looking to deploy the tool to streamline call center, revenue cycle and supply chain operations. “We view the relationship with Anthropic as being an anchor point that helps us orchestrate a lot of other AI,” Michael Reagin, Banner’s executive vice president and chief technology officer, told Bekcer’s.

8. Other health systems using Claude include Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health, Palo Alto, Calif-based Stanford Health Care, Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital, and San Diego and Orange, Calif.-based Rady Children’s Health

9. Anthropic has more recently been developing Claude Mythos, which has put health system leaders on edge because of the AI’s ability to detect and exploit cybersecurity vulnerabilities. The company has put the public release of the tool on hold for that reason.

10. In February, the Trump administration moved to cancel its contracts with Anthropic and declared the company a supply chain risk after the startup refused to be involved in mass domestic surveillance and autonomous weaponry. The dispute is still working its way through the courts.

11. Tech giants such as Google, Amazon and Nvidia have lined up to pour tens of billions of dollars into Anthropic.

12. Anthropic is reportedly in talks to raise $30 billion for a valuation of $900 billion, which would be higher than OpenAI. Anthropic is currently valued at $380 billion.
