Clinicians using at least one AI tool report significantly higher EHR satisfaction than non-users, according to a KLAS Arch Collaborative report released July 17.
The report, “AI Insights from the Arch Collaborative 2026,” draws on survey data from 12 Epic organizations collected since January 2026 and on interviews with Epic health system executives.
Here are 4 key findings from the report:
- Clinicians using one or more AI tools average a Net EHR Experience Score (NEES) of 72.2, compared with 64.9 for non-users, KLAS found. Agreement that the EHR enables efficiency is 7 percentage points higher among AI users than non-users. Gains rise as clinicians adopt up to four AI tools, then plateau; clinicians using five or more tools report no additional improvement.
- Documentation is the most common AI use case, followed by summarizing patient histories and summarizing shifts or patient stays.
- Adoption patterns diverge sharply by role. Physicians and advanced practice providers lean toward visit-note drafting and history summaries, while nurses use AI more for shift summaries and patient-message workflows, per the report.
- Training remains a gap. Fewer than 25% of clinicians who have adopted AI tools agree they’ve received adequate training on using AI-generated content, KLAS found. Among Epic clinicians using ambient speech tools, those who strongly agree they know how to optimize the tool report a NEES of 90.8, compared with 50.4 among those who strongly disagree.
“Implementing AI tools isn’t as simple as just turning them on,” a CMIO told KLAS. Each tool requires careful attention to workflow and adoption to determine whether users find real value, the CMIO said, and that takes time and effort from IT and informatics staff.
