Providers at Renton, Wash.-based Providence are saving 2.5 hours a week of after-hours work with ambient AI, the health system’s researchers found.

Here are five things to know from the July preproof study in Future Healthcare Journal:

1. The researchers studied 24 Providence family medicine providers likely to benefit from ambient AI for clinical documentation who used Microsoft’s DAX Copilot during a six-month period in 2022.

2. The providers spent 2.5 fewer hours per work on “pajama time,” or off-hours documentation.

3. The clinicians also reported significantly reduced documentation burden, frustration and burnout.

4. “This study demonstrates that the use of ACI [ambient clinical intelligence] does indeed relieve the documentation burden and had both subjective and objective benefits,” the authors concluded. “The widespread use of ACI has the potential to alleviate the crisis of physician burnout.”

5. Microsoft provided a limited number of software licenses, but no funding, for the study.
