AHA, Anthropic help shape state oversight of autonomous clinical AI

The American Hospital Association, American Medical Association, Anthropic and Elevance Health are participating in a national workgroup developing recommendations for how state medical boards should oversee AI in medical practice, a spokesperson for the Federation of State Medical Boards confirmed to Becker’s.

FSMB announced the workgroup in May to develop recommendations and/or model guidelines for state medical boards, particularly regarding AI systems that perform clinical functions with limited or no direct physician supervision. The effort comes as companies test how AI can be used in diagnosis, prescribing and other clinical functions, and as states propose and implement regulatory sandbox frameworks, according to FSMB’s news release.

The group met in Washington in early October, the FSMB spokesperson confirmed to Becker’s.

An AHA spokesperson separately confirmed to Becker’s that the association is participating in the workgroup. The spokesperson also confirmed that the group is examining oversight of AI systems that perform clinical functions with limited or no direct physician supervision.

Draft recommendations are expected in the coming weeks or months, according to the FSMB spokesperson. The guidance is intended to inform state medical board policies and potentially broader state-level regulation.

The initiative builds on FSMB’s previous work examining the use of AI in medical practice, including its 2024 policy guidance.

Becker’s has reached out to Anthropic for comment and will update this story if more information becomes available.
