Charlotte, N.C.-based Advocate Health has sped up prior authorizations with AI in Epic.
Here are five things to know from a May 4 Epic case study:
1. Advocate Health replaced phone and fax-based prior authorization workflows with digital processes in Epic for specialty medications.
2. The health system implemented AI-generated draft responses for payer questionnaires tied to prescription prior authorizations.
3. The AI-assisted workflow cut pharmacy staff time spent on each authorization from as much as 25 minutes to about five minutes.
4. Advocate Health also reduced the time needed to answer prior authorization questionnaires by a day or more, allowing requests to be submitted an average of one full day sooner.
5. The health system expanded the automation and AI-drafted response tools across specialty, outpatient and centralized retail pharmacy operations after involving staff in feedback on the technology
