Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic has nearly 100 AI algorithms in use that leaders are building “into the fabric” of the health system, the Rochester (Minn.) Post Bulletin reported.
Here are six things to know from the July 8 article:
1. The health system employs 97 AI algorithms. “We’re building AI into the fabric of Mayo,” said Matthew Callstrom, MD, PhD, chair of radiology and medical director of generative AI.
2. One algorithm, RecordTime, allows providers to quickly extract information from a patient’s medical records outside of Mayo.
3. Mayo has also adopted Abridge to automatically generate notes about visits between patients and their physicians and nurses.
4. Other AI tools evaluate brain wave patterns, catch surgical site infections, and analyze stool samples to assess the health of a patient’s gut biome.
5. Part of the strategy is the move away from the EHR. “A lot of what clinicians do is they serve Epic,” Dr. Callstrom said. “The future of healthcare — and it’s not very far away — we actually use technology in a different way. We push it into the background, we enable and empower our physicians and caregivers so that they actually have the information that they need in a way that is most effective.”
6. Another 270 AI algorithms are in development at Mayo, including ones that predict a patient’s likelihood of developing a certain cancer or whether a particular treatment will work for a certain person.
