Agentic AI arrives for nursing shifts and health systems’ front doors

New generative AI agents target different parts of the health system and patient journey — one for inpatient nursing and the other for what is oftentimes a fragmented mess of getting patients through systems’ front doors.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Hippocratic AI is rolling out both. The products run on Hippocratic’s Polaris safety architecture, which the company says has facilitated more than 180 million patient interactions and been validated by more than 7,500 licensed clinicians.

Nurse Co-Pilot is an AI-powered voice assistant that handles admission education, patient teaching, caregiver preparation and medication walkthroughs — tasks that take up hours of every nursing shift.

Nurse Co-Pilot runs inside the EHR. A nurse picks the patient and the use case. The AI agent then places the call, holds a voice conversation that adjusts to the patient’s comprehension level, answers questions in real time, then writes a structured summary and full transcript back to the chart. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, OhioHealth and Cleveland Clinic co-developed the tool and are the first to go live.

The goal is to offload one to four hours of education and documentation work per nurse, per shift, and redirect that time to bedside care, while also working to lower preventable readmissions. “There’s been a lot of innovation bringing tools to physicians,” said CEO Munjal Shah. “The space of helping nurses give back time in their lives has been underinvested, frankly.”

Amy McCarthy, Hippocratic’s chief nursing officer, said the product grew out of a problem she watched play out on units every day. “You will hear nurses across the board say they don’t have the time to do enough,” she said.

AI Front Door takes on the patient access side. The concept here is to replace the tangle of call centers, IVRs and portal logins with a single AI agent that can schedule appointments, answer billing questions, explain lab results, arrange transportation and follow up after visits — across phone, text and chat — without making the patient start over each time.

Chief Product Officer Vishal Parikh drew a deliberate line between the new product and the “digital front door” language the industry has used for years.

“The digital front door has become this thing that’s all about call deflection — just don’t send it to the humans,” Mr. Parikh said. “AI Front Door is about helping the patient.”

The tool is omnitopic, meaning a patient can start by scheduling an appointment then move seamlessly into questions about lab results, address a billing issue, coordinate a referral, arrange transportation and follow up on care instructions in the same exchange. What’s more, every interaction builds on the last with full awareness of patient history and past conversations.

AI Front Door rolls out to initial partners in May 2026.
