71% of Data Breaches Are Detected By Third Parties

A new report by Chicago-based Trustwave, a data security provider, has found 71 percent of companies that experienced a data breach in 2013 did not detect the breach themselves, with many of the breaches being first discovered by law enforcement and banks.

The report, which examined nine industries including healthcare, also made the following findings:

  • 31 percent of data breaches were caused by weak password protection that allowed hackers or unauthorized users to infiltrate a system
  • It took companies an average of 87 days to detect a data breach

  • It took companies an average of 7 days to contain a data breach caused by a malicious attack
