7 team-building tips for CIOs

A cohesive team unit is the basis of any successful IT team. Cio.com recently gathered input from leaders who fill the CIO role in their respective companies and compiled seven tips for their counterparts looking to build a high-performance team:

  1. Focus on the human element: CIOs should ensure they invest in their teams and make everyone feel welcome. 
  2. Prioritize culture: Businesses with a welcoming culture will retain employees longer than businesses that do not.
  3. Account for employees' futures: Give them time to discuss their career goals and provide room to achieve them.
  4. Enable room to grow: Allow employees to learn something new and develop different skills they can bring back to the IT department.
  5. Promote meaningful work: Employees want their work to be meaningful and exciting. CIOs should make a note to promote exciting projects to prospective employees.
  6. Learn from failure: Failure is inevitable in any business and CIOs need to learn not to run from it; rather, they should encourage team members to turn failure into a positive.
  7. Embrace fusion teams: IT teams should be integrated with business units. This fusion leads to greater collaboration between business and IT goals.
