5 trends in electronic health information exchange & interoperability

Non-profit DirectTrust has indicated six key trends it predicts will influence interoperable electronic health information exchange within the next year.

"In the world of electronic health information exchange, we're on track for another year of momentous forward movement in increased adoption by providers and greater interoperability between federal and state agencies with private-sector providers. We'll also see, finally, patient and consumer participation in the use of electronic health information exchange," said David Kibbe, MD, president and CEO of Direct Trust.

Here are the five predicted trends.

1. Patients and consumers will become more active participants in electronic health data exchange.

2. "Freed" health data will enhance personal and professional uses of the data.

3. Federal and state agencies will continue to move toward improved interoperability.

4. Meaningful use Stage 3 will face an uncertain future.

5. Data security and privacy will become more of a priority.
