Mobile health technology has become an increasingly important part of the modern health IT industry. As the five statistics below show, the number of mHealth users will continue to rise in the coming years:

  • Globally, smartphone users will hit 1.75 billion, according to eMarketer.
  • Currently, 91 percent of the adult population in America owns some kind of cell phone, and 56 percent own a smartphone, according to Pew Research.
  • Americans are increasingly using their smartphones as a go-to source for health information and monitoring. More than five million people will be using healthcare apps by 2015, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
  • The global mHealth market is forecasted to hit $20.7 billion by 2018, according to research by Markets and Markets.
  • Because of the aggressive growth in the mHealth market, advertiser spending in this space will continue to increase. Ad spending was up 100 percent in 2013 as compared to 2012, including a 744 percent jump in the pharmaceutical industry, according to an eMarketer report.
