3 things to know about QPP hardship exceptions

To participate in the advancing care information performance category of the Quality Payment Program, providers must use certified EHR technology, but under the Merit-based Incentive Payment System scoring, certain clinicians may qualify for a reweighting of their performance category score.

If a clinician qualifies for reweighting, the 25 percent weighting of the advancing care information performance category would be reallocated to the quality performance category, leaving the advancing care category scored to zero.

Here are three things to know.

1. Lacking CEHRT does not qualify the MIPS-eligible clinician or group for reweighting.

2. A MIPS-eligible clinician or group may submit a QPP hardship exception application if they have insufficient internet connectivity, extreme and uncontrollable circumstances or lack of control over the availability of CEHRT.

3. Some MIPS-eligible clinicians are considered special status and will be automatically reweighted. These include:

  • Hospital-based MIPS-eligible clinicians
  • Physician assistants
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Clinical nurse specialists
  • Certified registered nurse anesthetists
  • Non-patient facing clinicians
  • ASC based MIPS-eligible clinicians (proposed in QPP year two)
