3 Resources for CMS’ New Pre-Payment Audits

Last month, CMS announced the implementation of pre-payment audits on providers that participate in Medicare and Medicaid and also participate in electronic health record incentive programs. These pre-payment audits will be performed in addition to the post-payment audits that have been conducted since 2011.

CMS has created new online resources to educate providers about the audits. These are:

•    A fact sheet, called Supporting Documentation for Audits, which provides information about the audit process and what documentation to save to support attestation.
•    Sample audit request letters for eligible professionals and eligible hospitals.
•    A fact sheet, called Audit Overview, which provides an overview of the audit process.
