2 common challenges to EHR integration for children's hospitals

Surveys of 133 Children's Hospital Association hospitals outlined the most common challenges these hospitals face in EHR integration associated with meaningful use incentive payments, according to a recent study published in the journal Pediatrics.

Here are the most frequent hurdles children's hospitals face in EHR integration, according to the study

•49 percent of respondents reported exchanging clinical information with other providers outside of the hospital system as a top challenge.
•41 percent of respondents reported generating numerator and denominator data for quality reporting directly from EHR as a top challenge.

The results were combined with preexisting data on hospitals that received MU incentive payments before March 2014 and children's hospital type was also taken into consideration.

Researchers noted that freestanding children's hospitals were both more likely to declare MU criteria irrelevant to pediatric care and to successfully receive MU incentive payments. Based on 2014 data, only a minority of children's hospitals have reported receiving MU incentive payments. Thirty-five percent of the responding hospitals received MU incentive payments.
