The hospital did not say how many of the employees were fired, but did say all were disciplined, according to the report.
The snooping was identified by the record itself, which records every time an employee accesses a record. Additionally, the system creates a data trail which helps determine if the employee had a reason to look at the record. The hospital learns of patient privacy concerns and violations either through complaints or by monitoring the records of high-profile patients, according to the report.
Carilion Clinic did not identify the patient whose record was accessed, but spokesman Chris Turnbull told The Roanoke Times, “If a big story pops up, we regularly monitor employee access into the medical records system.”
