12 AI initiatives launched by hospitals, health systems in 2019

Here are 12 artificial intelligence-focused projects and institutes launched by hospitals and health systems in the first half of 2019, beginning with the most recent:

1. Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, Mass., Emory University in Atlanta, Seattle-based University of Washington, the University of California San Francisco and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston joined Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and The Ohio State University in Columbus in participating in the American College of Radiology’s pilot program to tailor an AI model to the unique radiology imaging needs of each of the seven health systems.

2. Mount Sinai Health System in New York City partnered with Burlington, N.C.-based LabCorp to establish the Digital and AI-Enabled Pathology Center of Excellence, which will serve as a hub for the expansion of Philips’ AI-powered digital pathology system across Mount Sinai’s eight hospitals and several ambulatory care facilities.

3. Indianapolis-based Community Health Network began rolling out M*Modal’s conversational AI platform to provide clinicians with virtual scribing and automated transcription capabilities.

4. Mount Sinai Health System launched the Hamilton and Amabel James Center for AI and Human Health to promote the use of AI, data science and genomics to advance disease research and treatment.

5. Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical Systems deployed a proprietary machine learning model called the Baltimore score to better predict readmissions.

6. Novant Health in Winston-Salem, N.C., established the Institute of Innovation & AI to develop AI-powered solutions that will generate data and insights for disease prediction, diagnosis and treatment.

7. Hardin Memorial Health in Elizabethtown, Ky., became the first health system to implement IBM Watson Health Imaging’s AI program trained by radiologists to extract clinically relevant information from a patient’s EHR.

8. Yale New Haven (Conn.) Hospital teamed up with local government officials to propose the introduction of autonomous vehicles on the shuttle route between the health system’s two main campuses and a parking garage.

9. Boston-based Partners HealthCare announced plans to provide all clinicians and researchers with AI tools by early 2020, with a focus on increasing access to the data, computing capacity and software needed for clinicians to develop their own AI algorithms for clinical use.

10. Health Quest Systems announced the deployment of IBM Watson Health’s AI-powered clinical trial matching system throughout the LaGrangeville, N.Y.-based health system’s hospitals.

11. Cleveland Clinic launched the Center for Clinical Artificial Intelligence to foster collaborative research in the fields of pathology, genetics and cancer, among others, to solve clinical issues using machine learning and other AI technologies.

12. Northwell Health in New Hyde Park, N.Y., software that analyzes medical history and social determinants of health to identify patients at risk of readmission, then recommends steps to mitigate that risk.
